Micromanipulation Techniques

Micromanipulation techniques can be used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) for specialized cases, when recommended by a physician. Our center offers the following micromanipulation procedures.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is typically used to treat couples with male factor infertility. ICSI is a procedure in which single sperm are injected directly into individual eggs by means of a microscopic glass needle. ICSI may aid in such cases of male factor infertility as low sperm count, azoospermia (absence of sperm in the ejaculate), poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm structure.

Assisted Hatching (AH)

Assisted hatching (AH) may be utilized in cases where there is believed to be a risk of hatching abnormalities or difficulties. AH is a procedure in which a very minute amount of a weak acid is placed on the clear shell of an embryo (known as the zona pellucida), prior to the embryo's transfer into a woman's uterus.

Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) may be used during IVF cycles to screen an embryo for certain conditions, such as genetic diseases or chromosomal abnormalities, prior to embryo transfer. PGD is used in conjunction with embryo biopsy, in which a single cell from a multi-celled embryo is examined under a microscope.
